BFHS Counseling Department

  • Ms. Joyce is the school counselor for students with the last names A-G. Ms. Joyce is in her 8th year as a school counselor and her 10th in education. She received her Bachelor's degree from Iowa State University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Biology. Ms. Joyce began her education career as a coach and special education paraeducator while attending the University of Iowa for her Master's degree in School Counseling Education and Rehabilitation. She worked her last year of graduate school until 2020 in Muscatine, Iowa as a school counselor before transitioning back to central Iowa to work at Colfax-Mingo Jr/Sr High for 4 years. Ms. Joyce's hobbies include watching college sports (Go Cyclones!), playing rec league sports, coaching JH/HS athletics, cooking/baking, traveling, and spending time with her three dogs (including her certified therapy dog, Eevee!).

    Mr. Michael is the school counselor for students with the last names H-O. Mr. Michael is in his 5th year as a school counselor. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in Family Services and minors in Spanish and Translation. Mr. Michael decided to continue his education at the University of Northern Iowa after graduation and got his Master's Degree in School Counseling. Mr. Michael's hobbies include reading, spending time with his family and friends, going to concerts, playing card and board games, and traveling. Last summer, he was able to go on his favorite trip yet! He got to go to London to see Harry Styles in concert and the Royal Family!

    Mrs. McMurray is the school counselor for students with the last names P-Z. Mrs. McMurray is in her 20th year as a school counselor and her 24th in education. She received her B.A from Central College in Pella, Iowa with a major in Communications/Theatre and a minor in English. Mrs. McMurray began her career as an English/Speech teacher. She attended Drake for her Master's degree and received her M.S.E. in School Counseling. Mrs. McMurray's hobbies include college football (Go Hawks), college basketball and March Madness (Go Tarheels), traveling, reading, and spending time with her family.

    Mrs. Riley is the college career transition counselor who is shared between DMACC, North Polk & BFHS. She recently held the same position in Ogden & Boone. She is at BFHS on Tuesday's and Thursday's.
